Working at Re:So

With the semester almost coming to a close, many second year students will be looking for work placement, for industry experience as well as many completing the Work Based Learning assignment. For those interested in Fashion, Solent University has a student-led brand that sells products designed by our students and alumni. They take on many interns every year and even provide the possibility for a paid role.

We decided to chat with several students that undertook placements or paid positions at Re:So over the past year and discover the many roles that are available.

Nikki:

I did my Worked Based Learning at Re:So as their Graphic Designer and even continued after my placement was up. I made any posters or information that needed to be put out on the store. I also got the opportunity to redesign the fitting room, which was quite interesting as I’d never worked in interiors before. I loved being their graphic designer as it taught me a lot more, as I only knew graphics from a fashion perspective (from my course), whilst also giving me more experience working for a client.

I then took on a permanent position as a Merchandising Store Associate, which involved basically running the store if you were the only paid staff in. Just making sure the store stayed neat and tidy and if we got new stock in to make sure it got out put. I definitely enjoyed it as it gave me a lot of responsibilities but also a lot of flexibility within the store.

One thing that my experience at Re:So definitely changed for me was my merchandising skills; before I started there they were awful. Now I think they’re a lot better and I’ve noticed, especially since moving home, how much it’s enhanced my decor skills, and how I view space.

Leah:

My role at Re:So is the Social Media Coordinator, which entails planning and organising content across the social media channels. I also have the chance to promote events that are collaborating with us, like organisations and charities, which is an amazing opportunity for Re:So as we can expand our audience and inform new customers on what we have and what we’re all about.

Prior to my paid role, I did work experience as a Trend Researcher and then a Social Media Assistant. I’ve definitely enjoy working at Re:So; it’s given me new skills and developed the ones that needed improving too.

Katie:

My role at Re:So is a Social Media Assistant, working alongside Leah. My role is to prepare and photograph current and new in-store products, ready to be post on all three of the social media platforms (Instagram, Facebook & Twitter). Alongside this, I post on stories to keep engagement consistent with our online followers. The social media is an important aspect in increasing store sales, reputation and popularity.

Previous to being a part of the Re:So team , I completed a 2 month Social Media work placement with Re:So which opened the door to me having a permanent position which was very exciting. I enjoy my role at Re:So as it allows me to explore my creativity when posting on social media and allows me to use many of my skills.

Amelia:

I completed several days’ work experience with Re:So as part of the Events Team. I got to practice Visual Merchandising, something I’ve never done before, and work with stock. I then got to work with other staff on events such as Victorious Festival and various Fresher’s Week events, helping run stalls and attract potential clients. I really enjoyed my time at Re:So and am thankful to have had the opportunity to work on live events, something I want to base my career on in the future.

Due to the current circumstances, Re:So will be closed for the time being. Be sure to follow their Instagram page @resosouthampton to stay updated and see some of the products they offer. If you ever find yourself bored next semester, be sure to check it out!
